Fintech, short for financial technology, refers to the integration of technology into financial services to improve their delivery to consumers. It encompasses a broad range of applications, from mobile banking and peer-to-peer payment platforms to cryptocurrency and investment apps.

What Does Fintech Mean?

Fintech is the innovative use of technology in the design, delivery, and consumption of financial services.  The goal is to streamline, enhance, and personalize financial services.

The common types of fintech are:

  • Digital banking – online banks and neobanks offering banking services primarily through digital platforms without physical branches.
  • Peer-to-peer lending – platforms that connect borrowers directly with lenders, bypassing traditional financial institutions.
  • InsurTech – technology-driven innovations in the insurance industry designed to increase efficiency and tailor policies to individual needs.
  • Crowdfunding platforms – websites that allow individuals or businesses to raise funds via the Internet.
  • Robo advisors – automated investment platforms that provide financial advice or investment management online with minimal human intervention.

Initially, the term fintech was associated with the technology employed at the back-end systems of established financial institutions. However, it has since evolved to encompass a wide range of consumer-oriented services that aim to improve the accessibility of financial services.

What Is a Fintech Company?

A fintech company utilizes technology to support or enable banking and financial services. Fintech companies can range from startups focused on specific technological solutions to tech giants venturing into the financial sector with new applications and technologies.
